What we do

The Dunedin Curtain Bank up-cycles unwanted and unused curtains, lines them, and distributes them to those in need in our community.

Why we do it

Curtains make a significant difference to the warmth of a home. A third of all heat loss in an uninsulated home occurs through windows. Even double-glazed windows let out more heat than uninsulated walls.

What we don't want

We don’t want people getting sick. We want to invest in future generations.

A study found that within households containing a 9 month old baby, 18% put up with feeling cold to save on heating, 11% used no household heating, and 22% of the babies had heavy condensation in their bedrooms.

O’Sullivan K, et al, Child and Youth Fuel Poverty; assessing the known and unknown. (2016)

19.7 thousand children below the age of 5 were hospitalised due to disease of the respiratory system; and 27 thousand adults aged 65 and above were hospitalised due to disease of the respiratory system.

New Zealand's Health Statistics 2014/2015

Over 5 years Dunedin Curtain Bank has given out 2,500 pairs of curtains.
Last year we gave over 650 pairs of curtains throughout Dunedin and its greater area.

Did you know?

We train social work students from Otago University. Every year we take one social work student interested in community development for a work placement.

Our volunteers are retirees and we support placements from PACT, Workbridge and Dunedin Training Centre. We help those who have been out of employment for periods of time. We provide these individuals with an opportunity to gain work experience and references which they can use in the future to potentially gain employment.

We save tons from landfill through utilising all the donated curtains we receive. Those that are not fit for the purpose of curtains get up-cycled as products for our gorgeous Enviroshop.

With every completed curtain referral we give, hooks and information pamphlets on how to reduce humidity in your home and how to kill mould. If required, we can also help with curtain rails.

For us to help others and their health, we need you to help us. Please consider donating, spreading the word, holding a fund raiser for us or purchasing one of our unique up-cycled creations.
