Who can access curtains through our Service?

Eligibility Criteria

You can access curtains through our service directly or via a social service agency.  To access the service directly you will need one of the following:

  • Community Services Card
  • Gold Card with Community Service Card
  • Student ID

Our service is free, but we would greatly appreciate a donation/koha to help with our running costs. Our suggested koha is $5 per set of curtains. and any donation received will help support our service – thank you!

Others in need are welcome to apply and will be considered at the discretion of the DCB manager. This will be assessed on financial, health and personal circumstances.

What we provide

Dunedin Curtain bank can provide lined curtains for the following:

Bedrooms: The bedrooms of children (15 years and under) and the elderly (over 65 years) or those with a health condition.
Main Living Area: We will also provide lined curtains for the main living area where the main heat source for the living space is located.
Doors: We may also provide curtains for doorways, depending on the circumstances.

We can also line your own curtains instead of supplying new curtains, provided they are in good condition and fit the windows appropriately.

Curtain Rails: We may also be able to provide curtain rails to some clients, this depends on what we have in stock. We need to know a rail is required when a referral is made.

All of our curtains are provided as standard curtains with pocket tape, unless we specifically advise you otherwise.

We do not provide blinds.

All of our curtains are donated. Our staff and volunteers will select curtains for you based on this sizes needed and what we have available.

To apply for curtains you must:

Complete an online curtain referral form below; or download our referral form, complete and scan/email to info@dunedincurtainbank.org.nz

Alternatively you are welcome to come to Dunedin Curtain Bank, 174 Princes St,  bringing both your community services card and your window measurements.

Required window measurements include:

  • The width of your windows; and
  • The length from the top of the curtain rail to the bottom of the window sill; and
  • The length from the top of the curtain rail to the floor.
Please note that we may not always be able to provide floor length curtains, however we will provide you with the longest curtains possible between the lengths of the bottom of your window and the floor, to help conserve as much heat as possible.
Please note: there is may be up to a 4 week wait period (particularly during winter time) while we prepare your curtains.

Paid Alteration and Lining Service

Dunedin Curtain Bank is trialling a paid lining and alteration service for those that do not qualify for Community Service Cards but are still finding it hard to make ends meet.

Lined curtains are more effective than double glazing.

Please see Cost Friendly Curtain Making section on our website for more info.

And local funders have also added more subsidies which could make it FREE for those who qualify.  If you own and live in a house built before 2008, and either live in a lower-income area or have a Community Services Card, you may be eligible.

See the EECA Warmer Homes website for for more information about the scheme, or get in touch with local provider Aukaha – Better Homes Programme.
